STAR WARS: THE STAR WARSHIPS, the highly anticipated new Star Wars movie, is expected to top the box office with an estimated $7.5 billion worldwide, according the latest estimates from the Motion Picture Association of America.
But while it’s certainly a hit, the franchise’s box office success has been met with skepticism, especially as fans have been waiting to see the full franchise for years.
This new study, which was conducted by Empirical Marketing Research, is the latest in a long-running series of studies that have attempted to answer this question.
It’s not clear if the movie’s success was directly tied to the film’s prequel trilogy, or if it was just the result of the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the results are intriguing.
“The Star War franchise is not just a hit with moviegoers, it is a worldwide phenomenon,” Empiric Marketing Research analyst Ryan McDaniel told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If you were to take a look at a list of the top 50 films of all time, Star Wars would be number two.”
The study looked at the total grosses for the films between 1997 and 2020, and compared the total box office earnings between 1997 to 2020 with the total revenues of the movies, or revenue, which were then divided by the total cost of production.
For instance, if the first Star Wars film grossed $1.1 billion in the U.S., and then that film grosses $4.2 billion in China, that would translate to a total of $5.1 million in China.
The film’s overall gross was $3.3 billion, which is the highest gross of the franchise.
Empirics also looked at sales, which are based on sales figures on the home video market, which have been relatively flat over the past few years.
That’s the only way to make sense of the numbers, but McDaniel says there are a few possible explanations for why the franchise is doing so well.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily due to the success or failure of the first movie, it’s just that it’s been a very strong franchise, with great fan support,” McDaniel said.
“This has been an incredible series of movies.
You can see the success.
It is not surprising.
There are a lot of people who have been invested in the franchise over the years, and this franchise is really strong.”
The movie’s box-office success has also been met by a fair amount of skepticism.
Emprs CEO Mark Schaller said that a number of fans have expressed concerns about the movie, including that it doesn’t include all the iconic characters from the original trilogy.
“People are upset about the inclusion of Rey, Finn, and BB-8, because they feel they were never included in the original films,” Schallers said.
The fact that the film doesn’t have them in the sequel is another factor that may be contributing to the negative response, though, Schallert said.
And despite its success, the Star Wars franchise is still not as big as other franchises.
“It’s not a hit and it’s not going to be a blockbuster,” he said.
Still, the popularity of the movie seems to be growing.
“A lot of moviegoers are interested in seeing the movies and are interested that we can do more,” McDaniels said.
He added that he thinks the Star War film franchise will remain a part of the pop culture conversation for a long time.
“As we have gotten older, people want to see these things happen and want to be part of that,” McDavis said.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.
